Popularity of Showtime Series Growing like Weeds on Cable and Satellite TV
Fans of Jenji Kohan’s original comedy-drama, Weeds, are sprouting up nationwide on Showtime through cable and satellite TV and it’s only natural. Now in its fifth season, the show has been nominated for 19 Emmy Awards and 10 Gold Globes, one going to Mary-Louise Parker for her performance as the lead role.
The show revolves around Nancy, a newly widowed housewife who can no longer afford to live in the ritzy California suburb she came to call home. In order to make ends meet, Nancy becomes the neighborhood marijuana dealer, serving as one of the meanings of the name Weeds. Weeds is also a reference to widow’s weeds, or clothes of mourning worn after a woman loses her husband.
The title Weeds also refers to the tendency of suburbs to grow both rapidly and in a sprawling manner, choking out the rest of the landscape like weeds. For this, the opening credits ridicule the monotony and superficiality of middle-upper class suburban lifestyle to the tune “Little Boxes” by Malvina Reynolds and then sung by various artists in the first three seasons of the show.
Unlike most shows with storylines that revolve around drugs, this series adds a unique and humorous twist due to the fact that Nancy is a mother of two. While trying to set a good example for her children, Silas and Shane, she can also be seen secretly making drug deals on the sidelines of one of their sports games with other fiending parents.
In addition to receiving neighborhood parents as clientele, Nancy also begins getting advice from her accountant and city councilman to open up a bakery as a front for her drug sales. This happens once she steps up her game from selling standard smoke-able greens to weed-laced baked goods to cut her losses from the draw of customers to medical marijuana stores.
Another key character in the show are Nancy’s friend Celia, a manic, superficial and controlling wife of a cheating husband and mother of two daughters with whom she also does not get along. Her youngest and overweight daughter, Isabelle, is constantly the target of her passive-aggressive comments, as evidenced by the endearing nickname Isa-belly.She also happens to be the president of the local PTA.
As is to be expected when making a career change from housewife to drug dealer, life can’t all be as tame as a suburban Tupperware party. As the series continues, Nancy begins to face the violent realities of the drug dealing culture as she begins to expand beyond upper-middle class parents and is confronted by competitors, gangs and drug lords.
The final episode of the fifth season ended on August 31, 2009, attracting 1.3 million viewers. Followers of the show are holding their breath for the debut of season six, set to air August 16, 2010. If you don’t already have cable or satellite TV, this invasive show may just be your excuse to let it creep into your life.

Wireless HDMI
Cords are usually an eyesore. And yet thanks to wireless systems, your domicile is now looking a lot less like an office. The cordless telephone, the Bluetooth dongle, the wireless home theater system, they have all done miracles to rid your living space of the cable jumble. Now another digital wonder has come out — Wireless HDMI — so you could move that large-screen LCD TV from your desk to your wall without the need of the dreadful sight of dangling HDMI cords.
Wireless HDMI will allow you to enjoy high-definition audio and video programming in full 1080p without the need of drilling holes and running cables and wires between your TV and your Blu-ray player, DVR, cable box, or game console. Wireless HDMI devices are terrific for installations where your digital equipment are installed several feet apart — saving you a whole lot of time installing and connecting all of them.
This is particulary useful when you have got a setup that cannot store all your HD sources in one particular space.
This is how Wireless HDMI operates.
The Wireless HDMI apparatus, which is often a little black box, receives audio and video information from an HD source such as a Blu-ray player, and sends this high-definition broadcast to your HDTV or HD projector using ultra-wideband radio frequencies.
Still in its infancy, Wireless HDMI technology as expected suffered from a few problems with early gadgets that delivered volatile video signals and was limited to short-range coverage. What’s more, right now there is still no official standard for Wireless HDMI, and providers are utilizing their proprietary technology such as the Sony Bravia Wireless Link, Philips Wireless HDTV Link, LG Wireless 1080p, and Asus Wireless Display Connectivity.
Soon the Wireless HDMI technology is going to improve, and almost all devices that use HDMI cables will have wireless connectivity built in them. A few of the more recent devices that have displayed terrific promise are those from Gefen, particularly the EXT-WHDMI Wireless HDMI Extender.

Kansas City Television Options: Choosing Between Cable and Satellite TV
No matter where a household is located, there are more options when it comes to entertainment than ever before. Those who want to move all of their movie-watching to home can do so without sacrificing quality these days, thanks to the boom in high-tech equipment at incredibly low prices. With the latest high definition television sets focused on providing 3D capabilities at home and countless other HDTV options affordable for all sorts of budgets, it seems as though leaping forward into a world of new digital options is more commonplace than ever before.
Yet at the same time, people living in Kansas City and countless other Missouri cities are often still dealing with simpler choices than what kind of equipment to invest in to better turn a living room into the best possible entertainment center. With the world of cable seeming to be on its way out, there are plenty of people who aren’t quite sure whether or not it makes sense to upgrade to satellite tv.
After all, there has been a lot of talk about whether or not investing in dish service is actually worth it, and quite a lot of people think that there are still the same technical difficulties that might have occurred a decade ago when satellite first became an option for many Americans.
For anyone who is choosing between dish and cable reception today, the world is a completely different place than it was even five years ago. One of the big factors in change has been high definition, which now encompasses almost half of the channels that are on satellite tv. And with countless television sets capable of showing pictures in high definition, actually being able to get to channels that make the picture difference makes sense. So those who are forward-thinking about what’s on their screen tend to go towards the dish over cable, since cable was waiting to see if the technology was going to catch on. With cable playing catch-up, it seems that dish has a clear advantage over the future.
At the same time, tighter budgets in Kansas City means the need to look at where the most bang for one’s buck is. And initially, the idea of spending more to enjoy high-quality picture doesn’t sit well with families who are on a budget. But anyone who is enjoying more than a basic package of television should realize that cable does not allow the picking and choosing of channels that dish service does, meaning that those who are adding premium channels and other bells and whistles with cable are likely paying considerably more than they would be if they switched to satellite tv.
Likewise, those with dish packages can get out of a particular bundle without any penalty, and without having a contract extended for a couple of years more. This means that smart budgeting might involve moving away from cable simply because the options to use money smartly do not exist with their existing methods of making packages. As always, what really matters is figuring out which service manages to provide the best entertainment for one’s household at a price that is actually manageable month after month.
